“Thanks, Tommy!”

On May 2, 1971, Arlington began a weeklong celebration to honor Tom Vandergriff’s 20 years as mayor. Having just been elected to his eleventh consecutive term, “Tommy” was the center of a city-wide tribute reflecting the deep community appreciation for his transformative leadership.

The week kicked off with “Vandergriff Sunday” at local churches followed by an afternoon tea. The next day, a massive downtown parade saw hundreds donning “Thanks, Tommy!” buttons while confetti showered the Vandergriff family at City Hall. Throughout the week, the Chamber of Commerce and various civic groups hosted breakfasts and receptions; the fire department even named him honorary chief.

The festivities culminated on Friday with “Tommy Vandergriff Night” at Turnpike Stadium. A record-setting crowd of 15,322 gave the mayor a thunderous standing ovation before the Dallas–Fort Worth Spurs baseball game. Presented with a commemorative jersey and gifts, Vandergriff watched as a plane trailing a “20 Great Years Tommy” banner circled overhead. A 4-1 Spurs victory provided the perfect conclusion to Tom Vandergriff Appreciation Week.
