Remembering Martha Walker (1933-2025)

A true trailblazer for Arlington, Martha Walker (1933–2025) was the first woman elected to the Arlington City Council, serving from 1972 to 1982. As a co-founder of the Fielder Museum, she played a vital role in preserving and shaping Arlington’s local history. She volunteered selflessly for numerous organizations, projects, and activities dedicated to community betterment.

Born in Colombia, South America, in 1933, Martha grew up in Louisiana. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma, she moved to Arlington in 1960 and later graduated from UTA with a master’s degree in political science.

Remembered as an advocate, visionary, and inspiration to others, Martha passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, at age 91. A Celebration of Life in her honor was held at the Arlington Woman’s Club, commemorating her positive influence.

Martha Walker Park, dedicated in 2016, is a 13-acre neighborhood park in southwest Arlington featuring hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and a playground. The rustic, wooded area provides a quiet place for leisurely walks and a chance to connect with nature. Martha once remarked that the first things she sought when visiting a city were its parks and museums; it is only fitting that a beautiful green space now carries her name.
