Remembering Dr. Bobo (1897-1987)

Dr. Bobo, a notable and beloved physician and civic leader in Arlington, passed away on October 26, 1987.

Born Zachariah Blount Bobo, Jr. in 1897, he was one of twelve children. He grew up in Rhome in Wise County, and later attended Baylor University and the Baylor University School of Medicine. After first practicing medicine in Fort Worth, where he lived with his wife, Ruth, Dr. Bobo moved his practice to Arlington in 1931, renting a small office above Coulter’s Drugstore. He quickly expanded, opening a private 13-bed hospital in 1936.

Dr. Bobo was a general practitioner for over 55 years, spending most of his career on Center Street in Arlington. He was skilled as a diagnostician and healer, taking a holistic approach to wellness. Notably, he delivered an estimated 4,000 babies—fondly known as “Bobo’s Babies.” A long-time member of the Arlington Rotary Club, he was also an avid golfer, world traveler, and generous philanthropist.

In 1977, he published his autobiography, Ramblings of a Country Doctor, reflecting on his rich life and long career.

Dr. Bobo passed away during a fishing trip in South Texas at age 90. He is buried in Arlington’s Parkdale Cemetery and is fondly remembered by those who knew him.
