I was honored to speak at the Texas State Historical Association’s (TSHA) Annual Meeting yesterday. I participated in the session “We Are Off to the Races! Horse Racing History in Texas,” where I presented on Arlington Downs, one of my favorite local history topics.

Much of Arlington’s Black history is rooted in The Hill, a five-block area initially northwest of downtown. A vibrant community emerged through the decades offering a safe, close-knit environment when people needed it most. This piece was written for Downtown Arlington’s blog.
